More About Monmouth Plantation:
The plantation was built in 1818 and was purchased in 1826 by General John A. Quitman, a hero of the Mexican War. It remained in the Quitman family until about 1914.
The current owners, Ron and Lani Riches, bought the property in the 1970s. It had suffered a long period of neglect, but the Riches undertook a complete restoration and converted it to a bed and breakfast.
It has earned a four-diamond rating from AAA, and has been included on on Condé Nast's 2006 Gold List, along with Travel + Leisure's 2006 Top 500 Hotels of the World. Zagat has named Monmouth "One of the Top 50 U.S. Inns and B&Bs."
