Although most cosmetic procedures have the same steps and possible outcomes, every patient is unique and require unique steps in treating their dental disorder. There are people who are afraid of going to the dentist and as a result, the needed treatment will be put off until the disorder become severe. With advances in dental science, sedation dentistry is now offered by dentists. Cosmetic dentistry is no different whenever this type of treatment is needed. There are different methods of sedation that can be used to accommodate different types of patients.

Sedation dentistry is a procedure which uses anesthesia while a dental procedure or procedures are being performed. It puts the patient in a relaxed, sleep-like state. It's used for treatments that require a long amount of time in the chair and patients having difficulty controlling their movement. This procedure may not be for everyone so it's best to discuss it with the dentists about the advantages or disadvantages of it. There are different levels of sedation that can be applied to any patient. Minimal sedation is where a patient is awake but in a relaxed state. Moderate sedation is where a patient may not remember the procedure and experience word slurring. Deep sedation is a state between consciousness and sleep. General anesthesia is where a patient is completely unconscious.

Some cosmetic dentistry may involve painful treatments thus sedation dentistry is one good option to overcome dental pains. Again it's always best to discuss the sedation with your dentist. There are pros and cons in sedation dentistry. Here are some pros regarding the procedure. It provides a pain free experience for clients. If a dental procedure will consume a great amount of time or an extensive dental work is needed, sedation is a great way to go and have all the work done in one visit. Most clients will not remember what have happened or the time spent on treatment. It's also effective for people that does not have control of their movement such as kids or people suffering from Parkinson's disease. It will help the uncontrolled movement and will make the patient relax. People suffering from the extreme gag reflex will also welcome this procedure. Cons of sedation dentistry may involve insurance companies not covering the procedure. Sedation may affect certain medications a patient is having. Be sure to discuss all medications one is taking before proceeding with the procedure.

There are different types of sedation used in cosmetic dentistry:

1. Oral sedation – it can be prescribed by the dentist and can be taken a day before the procedure. Most common medication fall under benzodiazephines. Brand names like Valium, Xanax, Ativan, Halcion fall under the generic name mentioned above.

2. Inhalation – nitrous oxide is the most common gas used for this type.

3. Intravenous sedation – this involves placing a catheter in the vein and medication is delivered directly to the bloodstream. After sedation, the dentist will apply anesthesia to the part of the mouth that needs to be treated.

4. General anesthesia or deep sedation – this step will make a patient totally unconscious while treatment is going on. A patient will lonely awake after the effects of the anesthesia wears off or reversed with another medication.
