Mopeds are motorized bicycles that typically reach top speeds of about 25 mph. Although these machines may seem harmless, most states in the U.S. require operators to be at least 15 years old. Many states also require helmets until the age of 18. Disobeying moped laws can result in fines, delayed licenses or marks on your permanent record. - Minors living in Michigan must be 15 to legally ride a moped. Although you don't need a driver's license, you need a moped operator's license. Use of a helmet is also required until the age of 18. Breaking these laws can result in a $100 fine and delayed license approval until the age of 18.
- California moped laws are quite strict. You need a driver's license and an M2 motorcycle endorsement. A helmet, insurance plan and registration certificate are also required. In other words, California law treats a moped like a motorcycle.
- You need a driver's license to operate a moped in Florida. If the moped is under 50cc, you are not required to wear a helmet when riding. Although the moped must be registered, insurance is not mandatory.
