Some type of foods can cause allergies and aggravate ADHD symptoms. Foods such as sugar or dyes have been proven to cause behavioral problems.

Foods to avoid ADHD symptoms are most dairy, corn, wheat, juices because of high sugar content; especially if it contains high fructose corn syrup, chocolate, bacon and lunch meats like bologna and any processed type of meat that contains nitrates.

Many people not knowing what is causing their symptoms have allergies because the commercial food industry puts them in most everything we eat. How many people do you know that when placed on a restricted diet says "but, what am I suppose to eat, it's in everything?" Allergies are mainly caused from an over exposure to any substance, whether food, plants or indoor contaminants.

So if these are the foods to avoid, if you have an ADHD child, what should you eat? The best diet and this includes anyone, is the back to basics or Mediterranean diet. A plant based fruit and vegetable diet with good quality protein such as fish, beans, cheese and preferably organic as the base. The main idea is to stay away from artificial sweeteners, food colorings and highly aggravating foods like dairy, wheat, corn and gluten.

My nephew age six is autistic and has been on a strict diet for several years. He follows a diet much like foods to avoid with ADHD along with interaction therapies. He has shown remarkable advancement. His mother wanted to see if he would react to one of the offending foods (corn) and see if anyone noticed. Everyone noticed when she let him eat corn flakes one morning. Throughout the day his behavior worsened until the next day when it was out of his system. If you are just starting out and you have eliminated all foods to avoid ADHD for a couple of weeks or months, you can slowly introduce some foods back into the diet one at a time every several days and if there is no reaction go ahead and keep it in the diet.

Studies have shown that zinc and Omega-3 are deficient in the diets of ADD and ADHD. So along with foods to avoid if you have an ADHD child, foods you should include are plentiful fresh veggies that are rich in zinc and fish which is rich in Omega-3's; both are required for brain development.
