Painting A Series Of Landscapes

Have you ever thought about doing a series of landscape paintings? Painting a series of paintings with a recurring theme or subject-matter doesn't necessarily mean you're running out of ideas.
In fact the opposite is true.
Sometimes just doing a single painting can be restrictive - you feel there's so much more that can be said about the subject-matter or the themes you've explore in the painting.
Doing a series of paintings allows you to take an idea and really go with it - the more paintings you do, the more opportunity you have to explore your theme and subject-matter in depth.
How many landscapes? When it comes to doing a series of landscape paintings, you have two options.
First, you can base your whole series on a single landscape.
Each painting shows off different aspects or different interpretations of the landscape.
The second option is to paint a number of different landscapes that are linked by a common theme or subject-matter.
Painting a few different landscapes If you're going to do a series of paintings with each painting focusing on a different landscape, you have to choose your landscapes well.
The best thing to do is to simply pick far too many landscapes.
Say you're planning on doing a series of five paintings.
Go out there and pick loads more landscapes.
Take tons of photos from loads of different angles.
Once you've got a heap of reference material, narrow your choices down till you've got the ones you want.
You can think of the linking theme before you pick your landscapes or you can study them and decide on a linking theme then and there.
Painting a single landscape If you're going to do a series of paintings with the same landscape interpreted differently in each painting, you have to decide how to do this.
As well as painting it in different seasons or approaching it from different angles, there are many other ways you could approach it.
You could play about with light, see what the landscape looks like in different weather or see what it looks like with and without wildlife.
Visit the landscape at different times of day and, if you can, at different times of year to get a fee l for how much it changes.
The more change you see, the more change you'll be able to capture in your paintings.
Do you have the commitment? Painting a series of landscapes obviously takes more time than doing a single painting.
A project like this will need more motivation and commitment than a single painting will.
You should therefore make sure you're ready to see it through to the end.
Doing a series of paintings can be a rewarding project and is very often highly regarded by museums and exhibitions.
If you're looking for a new challenge, test yourself and see if you can create a series of landscape paintings.
