How to Repair Holes in an Original Hardwood Floor
- 1). Use 220-grit sandpaper to sand inside and immediately around the hole, taking off any splinters or loose material, and getting the hole smooth and clean. Blow out the dust.
- 2). Fill the hole with wood putty, pressing it in tightly with your fingers. Run the edge of a putty knife over it to get it flat.
- 3). Let it dry overnight. Sand it with your sandpaper, getting it smooth and clean. Blow off the dust.
- 4). Brush wood stain over the putty. Let it sit for one minute, then wipe off the excess with an old rag. Repeat if necessary until the repaired area is the same shade as the surrounding floor.
- 5). Brush varnish over the repaired area, covering it completely and blending it around the edges with the surrounding varnish.
- 6). Let the varnish dry for eight hours. Buff the surface lightly with your sandpaper to dull the shine so the next layer will adhere. Blow off the dust.
- 7). Brush on a second varnish layer. Let it dry, dull the shine with sandpaper, then brush on a third layer.
