How to Remove Vinyl Adhesive Flooring
- 1). Pull the baseboards away from the walls using a pry bar. Wear safety glasses and work gloves for protection against the wood particles.
- 2). Prepare a solution of 1 tsp. liquid dish detergent and 1 pt. warm water in a spray bottle. Thoroughly mix the solution to form soapsuds.
- 3). Cut the vinyl flooring into 12-inch wide strips using a utility knife.
- 4). Wedge a 5-inch wide putty knife underneath the first vinyl strip to loosen it from the subfloor. Pull up the end of the strip and peel it off the subfloor. If necessary, spray stubborn adhesive with the soapy water to loosen the strip from the subfloor.
- 5). Remove the remaining flooring strips using the same process.
- 6). Saturate the remaining adhesive on the subfloor with the soapy water. Leave the soapy water on the subfloor for 15 minutes to soften the adhesive and make it simpler to remove.
- 7). Dislodge the softened adhesive from the subfloor using a wall scraper. Scrape off all traces of adhesive.
- 8). Vacuum the subfloor with a shop vacuum to extract the loosened adhesive debris.
