A Tutu Tale: History Of Ballet

This elegant genre of dance dates back about 600 years ago. While most of us believe that ballet originates from France, its true origins are from Italy. The term 'ballet' is derived from the Italian word 'ballo'. Later, it was the French who adopted it, transforming it to 'ballet.'

An Italian Tale€¦
During a dance routine in Italy, some dancers were imitating fencing. Adding some acting in the practice, they developed something unique with their game. From there evolved the concept of ballet as we know it today.

Its popularity began extending nationwide and further towards their allies, France, when King Henry the Second, married an Italian lady, Catherine Medici in 1533. Catherine introduced to the French Court this graceful and refined dance technique. Dancers continued performing for the entertainment of the courts and their Kings and Queens. Ballet had yet not developed into a theatrical art form.

The Downfall In France & Italy€¦ The Russians Take On Ballet
Even with some of the most significant revolutions introduced in ballet (Pointe ballet first performed by Marie Taglioni), there appeared to be a decrease in the interest at the end of the romantic era.

At this point, Russia kept the ballet spirit alive, with some of their best art forms and spectacular dancers. Renowned Russian ballet dancers like Diaghilev, in the 20th century, created a unique global impression on ballet, which raised the bar to a whole new level.

The New & Final Face Of Ballet
Ballet dancers did not always wear tutus and satin pointe shoes. These had not been standardized just then. However, the intricate and complex footwork had started to be documented and promoted globally so that other cultures could adopt this form of artistic expression.
Today, after this rich history and evolution of ballet, it is the elite communities and ballet schools that take it upon themselves to uphold the traditions, standards and culture that ballet has always represented.
