Many small businesses start with owners that cover all areas of their business with tasks including taking out the trash, product development, sales and managing internet technology (IT). When these companies start growing to the point where either the quantity of IT work becomes too much or the required level of knowledge grows beyond the scope of the founders and employees the decision is made to outsource IT.

As it often happens, small companies will outsource IT to another small firm that demonstrates the capability to handle the issues that face the growing business at that time. Typically, the IT firm that is hired for the outsourced work will consist of one to a handful of technicians that will be assigned to service the account of the growing business. While this arrangement may work well at the outset, the continuation of a mutually satisfactory relationship tends to hinge on one primary factor; whether the firm that is providing IT service can keep up with the growth of the client company.

The challenges of this issue include:

* Growth of the networking needs of the client company A business that is growing at a fast pace with be hiring employees and expanding its infrastructure. These growing needs will demand more time from the firm providing IT services.
* Growth of the client company that requires increasingly sophisticated IT service A business that is expanding will need its network infrastructure to grow as well, which will add complexity and require a growing level of sophistication from the firm that is providing IT services. An example of this situation would be when a company needs to scale up its infrastructure quickly to meet the anticipated rush of traffic for a new product.
* The firm providing IT services will be looking to add new clients to its roster Like all businesses, the firm providing your IT services will be looking to grow by adding new clients. This can add to the workload of its existing technicians if the company is trying to cover new work without adding new employees.

If you are worried about, or are seeing signs that your business is outgrowing the firm that is providing your IT services, shopping for a larger IT company earlier rather than later than save downtime and the costs of working with a network infrastructure that has not grown enough to meet company needs. If you decide that its time for a change, make sure that the company that assumes your IT services has the resources and the people with the skill sets your company will require. After all, you dont want to be waiting for your IT firm to catch up with your business rate of growth.
