    • 1). Read the question carefully and determine what is being asked. Many questions or problems are tricky or confusing when you are trying to determine the answer required. Think through the problem and ensure you have all the required information you will need to solve the problem.

    • 2). Determine the formula you will need to apply to the question. Arrange the formula in a form that will solve for the information you seek. For example, a common formula for calculating velocity is distance / time = velocity. You can obtain other forms of the equation by applying algebra techniques to solve for time or distance. These formulas are time = distance / velocity and distance = velocity * time.

    • 3). Insert the information you have into the proper formula for your question. Carefully transpose all the information to obtain the correct answer.

    • 4). Type in the number on your calculator and obtain the final answer for your question. Velocity contains a direction component in the answer. You can visually determine the direction of the velocity or speed by understanding the question better.
