Instructions on Ceramic Tiling

    • 1). Prepare the surface for ceramic tile. This includes removing any nails, screws or staples. Fill in any holes or damaged spots with crack filler. Make sure the surface is flat by placing a level over the area. You can purchase a floor leveler from the local hardware store and apply it as directed if necessary.

    • 2). Apply a thin concrete backer board to the entire surface area. Lay the board perpendicular and screw it into place using the pre-marked, circle areas. The screws should be about six inches apart. Apply fiberglass, self-stick mesh tape to the seams of the board to finish it out.

    • 3). Mix the tile glue or mortar by the directions. Using a trowel, place the glue on the board or the backside of the tile. Place the tile on the backer board starting at the far corners and working outward from the wall. Press it firmly into place for about 10 seconds. Continue keeping the tile pattern square or straight by using the pattern on the backer board. Place a spacer of the desired width between each tile.

    • 4). Cut tiles to fill in the remaining the area. Measure from the outside wall or corner to the tile that needs cutting. Add the distance to the spacer size to get your cut measurement. Measure the tile for the cut and use a tile cutter or wet saw to make the cuts.

    • 5). Mix the grout after all of the tiles are glued in place and the glue has set. Use the grout to fill the gaps between each tile. The grout should be mixed to the consistency of peanut butter. Use a grout float to apply the grout. Wipe the floor with a large, wet sponge as you continue to apply the grout to ensure all of the cracks are filled and smooth.

    • 6). Spray the tile grout with a sealant after it dries. This helps prevent moisture from seeping under the tile in wet areas. Your local hardware store sells sealant for tile grout.
