Signs & Symptoms of Upper Abdominal Pain
- Pain in only one area of your abdomen could indicate a problem with one of your organs, like the appendix or gallbladder. Cramp pains are usually due to gas, but the pain may be severe.
- Pain in only the upper-left region of the abdomen may be caused by a variety of conditions, including heart attack, ruptured spleen, aortic aneurysm or pancreatitis.
- Upper-right abdominal pain may also be associated with conditions like appendicitis, problems with the gallbladder or liver, shingles or pleurisy.
- Kidney problems, angina, pneumonia, cancer of abdominal organs, intestinal obstruction or fecal impaction, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and many other conditions can all cause pain in one or both sides of the upper abdomen.
- In most instances of abdominal pain, you can care for yourself at home and wait to call your doctor only if symptoms persist. Drink water and clear fluids, avoid dairy products and pain medications (unless your doctor prescribes them) and try antacids for gas pain. If the pain persists or seems to indicate a more severe health problem, seek your doctor's advice.
