How to Make Pocket Rod Valance
- 1). Mount the drapery rod on the wall above the window you want to cover.
- 2). Decide the length of your valance window treatments. The typical length of a valance is one-third the length of the window, but yours can be any length you choose. When calculating the measurement for your valance length, begin at the top of the rod and go downward to the point where the bottom of the valance will hang. To this measurement, add 6 1/2 inches for the rod pocket, header ruffle and top seam. Add 1 inch for the bottom hem. The sum is the length to cut your valance fabric.
- 3). Measure the rod width. Double the rod measurement and add 1 1/2 inch for side hems. This is the width to cut your valance fabric. If your fabric is not wide enough, multiple pieces can be sewn together to form the width. In this case, add 1/2 inch for each seam.
- 4). Cut the fabric according to the valance fabric measurements. Sew the fabric panels together with a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Press the seam open.
- 5). Lay the valance fabric flat with the right side down. Double-fold the side seams 1/4 inch each fold. Pin the hem in place. Double-fold the bottom hem 1/2 inch each fold. Pin the bottom hem in place. Fold the top hem under 1/4 inch and pin. Machine-sew around all sides of the valance fabric with a straight stitch.
- 6). Create the header and rod pocket. Turn the top edge of the fabric down 6 1/4 inches. Pin in place and press. Ensure the fold is wrinkle-free and lies straight. Machine-stitch close to the 1/4-inch hemmed edge. From the folded edge, measure 2 inches for the header. Make a straight machine stitch across the top of the fabric at the 2-inch mark. Insert your rod into the larger opening, which is the rod pocket.
