- 1). Wash the car thoroughly with soap and water to get any dirt or grease off of the paint. Pay particular attention to the area around the scratch.
- 2). Determine whether the scratch has penetrated the clear coat. Deep scratches that penetrate the clear coat and into the color, primer or metal itself are difficult to repair. Deep scratches should be repaired by a professional to insure a proper finish.
- 3). Rub a substance of contrasting color, such as shoe polish or crayon, into the scratch. This will help you see how deep the scratch penetrates.
- 4). Sand the area with 2,000- to 3,000-grit sandpaper, which is available at most auto parts stores. Only sand until the deepest part of the scratch is flush with the surface. If you start to see the color in the sanding dust, you are sanding too much.
- 5). Polish the scratches from sanding with a liquid rubbing compound. Polish in a circular motion with a terry cloth until the scratches are no longer visible. When complete, lightly buff the remainder of the compound with a fresh cloth.
- 6). Wax the car with your usual car wax, paying close attention to the area where the was.
