Tips to Remember - Travelling to South Africa? Remember the following tips
(Not that you need to ‘fit in' in Africa – here you truly are free to be whoever you want.)
So, let's have a look at what you should remember when travelling to Cape Town, South Africa:
1. What you need to remember about our public transport. We have various types of public transports. We have our trains; what you should remember about our train station is that it is a work in progress. In fact, progress is being made extremely quickly! But it is still important to remember that you should never use the trains alone and you should always be aware of your stuff. Then we have taxis. We basically have two types of taxis. Minivan taxis, which are cheap and travel all over Cape Town and then also private, more expensive taxis. The latter are perfect for moving around quickly in the city centre. Our bus services are also an excellent example of a ‘work in progress'. Our new MyCiti bus services are amazing and will soon be travelling all over Cape Town! Whether you travel by train, taxi or bus there is always an even better way to experience Cape Town for exactly what it is and that is by WALKING. It's the way you will experience everything to the fullest!
2. Tipping. So, we know that for the most part tips are included in the bill when dining in Europe or America, but in South Africa it isn't. If you are happy with your service it is courtesy in our country to tip at least 10% of the bill. Other situations in which South Africans tip are: we tip the parking guard, the petrol attendant (yes, we still have those) and the guy selling the newspaper next to the road. These guys are everywhere in the early morning! South Africans are pretty serious about tipping and not doing so is considered rude – this is a friendly warning!
3. We like to chill. Sundays. Public holidays. And for most of us, Fridays. We like to take it easy. This is, after all, Cape Town. We're probably going to move slower than you prefer and don't be surprised if some of our businesses are closed. This is how we do things. You're more than welcome to take it easy with us!
4. Our Internet connection is probably slower than yours – PLEASE REMAIN CALM. We know our city looks good, but the reality is, this is still Africa and we don't have the Internet connection that the White House surely has. Don't be alarmed, go get yourself a coffee and give it a while. You'll get those emails sent.
There you have it. Four tips to remember when visiting Cape Town. Please note that these tips to remember are for you to use or not to use. A holiday to South Africa is sure to be a truly unforgettable experience no matter what tips you follow or don't follow.
