How to Kill Algae in Backyard Fountains
- 1). Read the manufacturer's manual that came with your fountain. Determine if there are any types of cleaning agents or chemicals that are not compatible with your fountain. Avoid using any of the products mentioned.
- 2). Turn off the fountain's pump. Unplug the pump from its outlet.
- 3). Drain the fountain completely of water. If your fountain does not have a drain, use a wet vac to suck out the water bit by bit.
- 4). Remove any stones from the bottom of the fountain. Place the stones in a large bucket or tub. Fill the bucket with equal parts water and white vinegar. Allow the stones to soak.
- 5). Uninstall the pump from the fountain. Place the pump in the kitchen sink to clean it. Dip a toothbrush in a solution of one part water and one part white vinegar. Scrub the outside of the pump with the toothbrush to remove any algae. Remove the access panel on the pump, and clean the inside of the pump with the toothbrush. Clean all of the crevices and openings on the pump. Rinse it with water.
- 6). Wipe down all of the inside surfaces of the fountain, using a rag. Remove any buildup of algae that you see. Soak the rag in the water and vinegar solution, and wipe down the fountain again after you have removed the heavier buildup. Use the toothbrush to clean any small crevices inside the fountain that you cannot clean with the rag.
- 7). Run a pipe cleaner to clear out the algae from any tubing and hoses.
- 8). Rinse the fountain stones with fresh water. Wipe each stone clean with your cleaning rag. Place the stones back in the fountain. Reinstall the pump in the fountain.
- 9). Fill the fountain with fresh water. Plug the pump back into its outlet. Turn the pump on to begin circulating fresh water.

Add an algaecide chemical if you desire to help prevent future growth. Remember to consult the manual as to which chemicals are safe to use with your particular fountain.
