New York City is one of the top tourist destinations in the world. If you're in New York at the end of October, you might want to participate in the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade. The parade organizers bill the event as the world's largest Halloween parade and celebration. Started in 1973, the Village Halloween Parade now draws as many as 50,000 people each year who dress up in costumes and march through the Greenwich Village area of New York. About a million spectators watch the parade each year, and there are numerous corporate sponsors for the event. In January, the borough of Brooklyn in New York hosts an unusual and crazy event known as "Carts of Brooklyn," or the "Idiot-a-rod," a play on the Iditarod dog sled race held in the Arctic each year. In the Brooklyn event, people race through the streets in shopping carts. They also have an egg fight and coffee chugging contest. The crazy event is open to anyone, and has a number of well known sponsors including McDonald's and Wal-Mart. Another unusual activity for visitors to New York is the Staten Island Boat Graveyard. This spooky area features a number of junked and wrecked boats from different eras in a local Staten Island harbour. The boats frequently change as new ones are abandoned and others are sunk into the murky depths. Many of the ships are photographed by professional photographers from around the world.
