Directions for Cushion Covers

    • 1). Find out the length and width of your cushion using a measuring tape.

    • 2). Make a newspaper template for your cushion. Double the length of the cushion measurement and add 2 inches. Add 1 inch to the width measurement. For example, if your cushion measures 16 inches by 16 inches, the template would measure 34 inches long and 17 inches wide.

    • 3). Place the fabric on your work surface right side facing down. Pin the template on to the fabric. Cut around the template. Remove the template.

    • 4). Turn over 1/2 inch of fabric on each of the shorter ends and press flat. Turn each end over by another 1/2 inch and press flat again. Pin each turned over end in place.

    • 5). Place the fabric in your sewing machine right side facing up. Sew along both shorter sides 1/3 of an inch in from the edge of the fabric. Tie off any loose thread ends. This forms a hem at each end of the piece of fabric.

    • 6). Place the fabric right side up on the work surface. Pull both of the shorter hemmed ends of the fabric in towards the middle of the piece of fabric until the ends overlap by 1 1/2 to 2 inches. Match up the edges of the un-hemmed left and right sides of the cover. Pin along these two sides.

    • 7). Sew along the two pinned sides of the cushion 1/2 of an inch in from the edge. Do not sew along the overlapping ends on the middle of the cushion, as this is how you will get the cushion into the cover.

    • 8). Turn the cushion cover right side out and press flat. Insert the cushion through the gap created by the overlapping ends on your cover.
