Neil Armstrong Air and Space Museum
The Neil Armstrong Air and Space Museum, located in Armstrong's hometown of Wapakoneta, Ohio (south of Toledo), celebrates the life and the mission of the first man to walk on the moon.
Who was Neil Armstrong?:
Neil Armstrong, a native of Northwest Ohio, is best known for commanding the Apollo 11 space mission and for being the first man to walk on the moon.
Prior to taking those historic footsteps on July 20, 1969, Armstrong served in the US Navy during the Korean conflict, flew more than 900 flights as a research pilot, and commanded the Gemini VIII space mission.
Exhibits:
Exhibits at the Neil Armstrong Air and Space Museum include an F5D Skylancer, one of the planes that Armstrong tested; the Gemini VIII space capsule, a variety of artifacts from the Apollo 11 mission, and a moon rock. There are also displays and memorabilia from Armstrong's life.
The museum also features a film about the development of the US space program.
Hours and Admission:
The Neil Armstrong Air and Space Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 930am to 5pm and on Sunday and holidays from noon to 5pm. From April through September, the museum is also open on Monday from 930am to 5pm.
Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for those age 60 and older, and $4 for children ages 6-12. Children 5 and under are admitted free.
Getting to the Neil Armstrong Museum:
The Neil Armstrong Museum is located just off of I-75 (you can see it from the highway), about 1 1/2 hours south of downtown Toledo and two exits south of Lima.
Visitors from the Cleveland area can take the Ohio Turnpike to the Fremont Exit, follow State Route 12 to Findlay, and pick up I-75 there.
You can combine a trip to the Armstrong Museum with a stop at the Hayes Presidential Center in Fremont.

What Else is There to Do in Wapakoneta?:
Wapakoneta is a small town of around 9,000 residents, but has an historic downtown and is known for its many antique shops. Just out of town is the restored 18th century Fort Recovery and the Bicycle Museum of America (in New Bremen).
