How to Cut a Design in Fabric Hair Bows
- 1). Select a punch designed to handle paper of standard thickness as well as thick, rigid paper. These punches typically have handles to aid the user in applying enough force to punch through denser material.
- 2). Select ribbon material. Acquire a sample amount only several inches in length before committing to a full purchase. While a strong punch is capable of cutting through woven material, you can simplify the process by selecting a thin fabric. Tightly-woven cotton ribbon is an excellent choice. Many silk-based ribbons will work. If you want to use grosgrain, try to find a thin, stiff grosgrain. Rigid ribbon, like cotton, will cut best.
- 3). Test the punch and sample ribbon together to ensure that your selected combination will be successful. If the punch does not make a clean cut, try another punch or other material.
- 4). Cut the total length of ribbon you need to make the hair bow. Lay it out flat on a work surface.
- 5). Slide the punch on the fabric, in position to cut.
- 6). Brace the fabric with two fingers, one positioned on either side of the punch. Hold the ribbon taut. This will help you create a clean cut.
- 7). Press the punch down to cut the shape into the material. Release it. Pull it back from the ribbon to check your work.
- 8). Repeat the process until you have finished making cuts down the ribbon. Do not cut too many times on the ribbon. You need enough material still intact so that it will hold together.
- 9). Apply a no-fray fabric sealant to the ends of the bow and the cutouts to ensure the bow does not unravel.
