How to Install a Construction Electric Meter

    • 1). Check with your local municipal electric department for the rules for establishing a connection between the job site and the main electrical lines. Find out about acceptable equipment, service inspections and any other guidelines that are particular to your area. Provide utility designs and obtain all required permits necessary to pass inspection so you can have electricity at your construction site.

    • 2). Find out where the main underground lines enter your property. Alternatively, know where the nearest overhead utility poles are. You'll have to dig a trench and install wire, or hang wire to meet up with the existing main power lines.

    • 3). Dig a 2-foot-deep hole and erect a 6-foot-tall 4-by-4 pole in it. Place it near the edge of the property nearest to the main power lines and away from the construction site traffic. Secure the pole with heavy rocks and cover the base with the dug-up earth.

    • 4). Get a meter box that has a housing and room for the kilowatt meter reader plus a 30 to 60-amp breaker, depending on the electric load you want. Make sure it also has a breaker switch.

    • 5). Attach the meter box to one side of the pole near the top. Open the housing of the meter box and bolt the box onto the pole from the inside. Use appropriate size bolts for your meter box.

    • 6). Use a screwdriver and screw in a two or four-plate electrical outlet onto the reverse side of the pole. These outlets will serve as the construction site power points for your equipment. Strip about 1½ inches of insulation off the ends of two sets of wires. Wrap exposed wire ends around the screws that are there for this purpose. Connect one wire to one end of the breaker switch and the other end to the power outlet. Do the same for the other wire on the free screws.

    • 7). Attach a piece of conduit onto the pole that will house the main electrical wiring once it's connected to the source. Use plastic ties to secure it into place. Strip wires as before. Thread dead main electrical wires through the conduit and connect to screws on the meter box.
