Toilet-Training Advice for Girls

    Summer

    • Summer is the ideal season to toilet-train your daughter because she will be wearing light clothing that is easier to handle. Shorts are ideal; they are easy to take down and pull up.

    Potty Chairs

    • Refrain from buying fancy potty chairs that play a merry tune when a child urinates. A real toilet doesn't play tunes and will only be a disappointment to your daughter. Place the potty chair in the bathroom or wherever the child plays the most; this will help prevent accidents.

    Praise

    • Sit your child on the potty chair every 45 minutes. This ensures that the child has a chance to do her business. When she uses her potty chair, always praise her. Clap your hands, smile and get excited about what she has achieved. This is the beginning for hygiene habits that last a lifetime.

    Accidents

    • Clean the potty immediately and make sure your daughter knows where it is after cleaning in order to prevent accidents. Do not scold your daughter if the occasional accident occurs; this is a normal part of the process and anger will only impede progress.

    Day Care

    • Remember that some day-care centers will not enroll your child unless she is out of diapers. Be consistent in your daughter's toilet training and never give up once you have started.
