How to Clear Rocks & Weeds From a Lawn
- 1). Locate the weeds before they begin to form seeds or spread into larger patches. Clearing young weeds is a much simpler task than trying to remove numerous older, established weeds. Also, if you pull the weed before it forms seeds, you will prevent a widespread infestation.
- 2). Pour warm water around the weed. This is especially useful if the soil is dry or hard and the weed has a shallow root system. The water will moisten the ground and make it easier to pull the weed and its entire root. If you're dealing with a larger weed with a deeper root, loosen the ground around the weed with a garden trowel.
- 3). Grasp the weed with your hand and pull firmly but gently. Pull the weed, along with its entire root, from the ground. If you allow the root to remain in the ground, the weed will inevitably grow again. Continue until all weeds have been cleared from the lawn.
- 4). Mow and water the lawn as needed. Unhealthy lawns are more prone to weed infestation. Adjust your mower so that approximately one-third of the grass leaf is removed per mowing. During extremely hot weather, water the lawn between one and three times per week. Allow the upper 1 to 2 inches of soil to dry before re-watering.
- 1). Spread a tarp on the ground near the rock you plan to remove.
- 2). Dig around the edge of the rock with a spade shovel. Place the soil on the tarp. Continue digging until you've removed enough dirt to expose the bottom edge of the rock.
- 3). Insert the end of a landscaping bar beneath the edge of the rock. Pry upward until the rock comes loose. Lift the rock out of the hole and move it out of your yard. Replace the soil in the hole previously occupied by the rock. If the rock is too large to carry, position it on the tarp. Attach the tarp to a lawn tractor or other vehicle and tow it out of the yard.
- 4). Rake the lawn with a standard lawn rake to remove small rocks, stones or gravel. Rake the rocks into a small pile and remove with a shovel. Place the rocks into a bucket or wheelbarrow and dispose in area away from your lawn.
