Fleece Fabric Projects
- Fleece fabric is an ideal material for winter outdoor accessories. Scarves are easiest to make since all you need to do is cut the fabric to the right dimensions. You can cut a fringe, sew or glue on ribbons, beads or other embellishments to customize the scarf, or leave it plain.
Make a pair of mittens by tracing your hand shape on a piece of fleece, cutting out two identical hand pieces and sewing them together. Thick socks can be made the same way, using an existing sock as a pattern. To make a winter hat, use a free pattern found on the internet. One way to make a fleece hat is to cut a large rectangle from the fabric, sew the fabric together on one side to make a tube and then gather the top together to close the hat. - Blankets and pillows made from fleece fabric provide warmth and comfort. To make a blanket, cut out the desired length of fleece, cut a fringe all the way around the fabric and knot the fringes. To make fleece pillows, cut out two smaller squares of fabric, and cut a fringe all the way around both pieces (keep them together for this). Place a pillow form or an old throw pillow between the two fleece fabric squares and tie the squares together using the fringes.
- You can modify a variety of sewing patterns for other projects to use with fleece fabric. For example, most tote bag or fabric purse patterns will work with fleece, but use a no-stretch fabric or alternative material for handles and shoulder straps. Many clothing patterns also can be modified for use with fleece fabric, such as ponchos, sweatshirts and lightweight jackets.
Other easy fleece fabric projects include eyeglass cases, bean-filled hand warmers or neck pillows, homemade feather dusters and fuzzy pom-poms that can serve as toys for young children or pets.
