Hunting the Talent

With millions of musicians in dozens of genres, it's no wonder the music industry is so profitable.
The music industry requires thousands, if not millions, of people to make it function.
The people rising artists want to hear from the most, though, are the ones that can make them famous.
No matter what genre they perform, musicians want to be heard by someone that can get them signed with a recording label that will get them radio play, major concerts, and albums.
The people that do this job listen to thousands of bands in the hopes of finding what may be the next new talent in the industry.
Otherwise known as talent scouts or A&R, the Artist & Repertoire Departments are the ones that can give those musicians their big break on a daily basis.
The entire job of the A&R department of any record label is to know what the fans want to hear.
They have to know music inside and out, and be able to predict what's upcoming in their industry.
When musicians want to submit a demo tape, the A&R department is where it goes.
The A&R department consists of A&R Coordinators, and A&R Administrators, and their job goes much further than sitting around listening to demo tapes.
The A&R Coordinator has to have a vast network of connections throughout the music industry.
They are the ones that know the history of music as well as the future of music.
They have a knack for hearing the hidden talent in a band or artist, and they have the power to develop that talent.
To find the newest sounds, they listen to demo tapes submitted to them, as well as going to live venues like clubs and festivals.
A&R Coordinators need excellent communication skills to recruit talent to sign with their label.
New talent isn't their only objective, though.
A&R Coordinators also try to lure established acts to their recording label, so their persuasive skills are crucial to showing musicians why their label can take them further.
The A&R Administrator is the right hand to the A&R Coordinator.
Their job is to handle the business side of the A&R department.
Where the A&R Coordinator brings the talent in, the A&R Administrator gets them on a financial track.
The A&R Administrator handles much of the clerical duties of the department, but they also create budgets for each musician.
They handle the arrangement of recording time to maximize the recording budget.
The A&R Administrator will track all the expenses for each artist, as well as the entire department to analyze ways to save on costs.
The A&R Coordinator depends heavily on the A&R Administrator to know what budget they have to pay the acts they are recruiting.
Every record label depends on their A&R department to keep them on the cutting edge of new talent.
The A&R department searches high and low to recruit the best artists and to make the most of their recording budget.
Next time you hear a new band on the radio, remember an A&R Coordinator was probably the one that found them.
