If you are serious about improving your credit score, the first place to start is with the three main credit bureaus.
Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax are the top agencies that maintain records for each person.
It is advised to check your records each year for errors and inaccuracies.
Even if you think you have good credit, sometimes the person who is responsible for inputting data can mistakenly type the inaccurate information.
Some people pull their annual credit reports from just one agency.
This is not a good practice because while one agency can have updated information in your records, one of the other two can have inaccurate reporting.
Reviewing all three is the only way to insure you are in good standing.
When you request your files, make sure that they include all of the information.
You need to review all of the details to make a good assessment of your scores.
If your score is around 694, your score is considered average.
This means you can most likely qualify for average size loans, or purchase items on financing.
You may face a few challenges should you need mortgage refinancing or want to purchase a new home.
If your credit is below 694 you will have to get proactive at improving it.
The time to start taking appropriate measures is now.
Never wait until you are sitting across from a loan manager only to hear that your scores are not good enough.
If you take the time now, and exercise a little diligence, you can make sure your credit meets the standards for the loan you need.
Should you discover errors in your credit files, take appropriate steps to dispute them as quickly as possible.
Never wait.
Because the long these errors are logged against you, the worse your credit score will become.
Why? Very few people realize that the length of time that your history remains tarnished counts against you too as one of the many factor used to calculate your score.
Send away for your credit files and once received, review them thoroughly.
If all of your information is accurate, file the annual report away.
If you have problems with in report document the errors with facts, contact numbers, and even account numbers if need be.
Make sure to use certified mail when communicating with the three main credit agencies.
The postage costs are nominal and can serve as proof that you attempted to correct misleading information in your files.
This may sound like a lot of work, but really it's not.
If you don't have the time or the confidence to deal with the credit agencies, then by all means enlist the help of a specialist.
