Have Americans Taken the Terrorism Pill
We knew who the enemies were and when the dust settled, it was the surviving nation(s) who administered the peace.
I often hear parallels between this war and the war on terrorism in order to promote our administration's agenda.
Can we honestly say that these parallels are legitimate? I do not believe they are.
After the planned fall of Great Britain, Germany and Japan planned to attack the United States on the east and west coasts.
At this point in time, the American people knew that they needed to support the war because their lives were at stake.
The "war" on terrorism is in name only.
The Republicans have to declare war on everything! You can not forget the fact that we had a war on drugs.
Look how far that policy got us.
Have we become a society that is too focused on greed and world domination that we are willing to sacrifice our obligations and morals to get it? The world has just as much to offer us in return without having to force our ideals on everyone.
Terrorism is a serious threat and needs to be dealt with on a global scale, but one nation's army alone can not defeat it.
Instead, we must strengthen security from within in a way that does not infringe upon the rights we hold dear.
In addition to this, we must enlist the help of and work with other countries around the world.
This is an ideological enemy that exists everywhere as the result of our policies abroad.
Such a global threat can only be fought by the global community.
The United States does not have the resources to do it alone.
At the rate we are borrowing money from other countries and spending on the Iraq war, the U.
S.
economy will financially struggle and implode in the same fashion as the Soviet Union did.
Just wait until energy, gas, healthcare, and cost of education boil to the point where Americans can no longer keep their heads above water.
It has been historically shown that terrorism and acts of war rise to their peaks when the global economy experiences a recession or setback.
This was due to the fact that capitalism was seen as a failure.
The western nations were to blame because they were promoters of such a system.
After 20 years of economic prosperity we are getting closer to a point in time where such imbalances need to be corrected.
If we can actively correct them the results will be less painful.
World War II developed towards the end of the Great Depression because people lost hope and began to favor extremist parties with a passion to take their frustrations out on neigboring nations and particular ethinicities.
The September 11th attacks were during our most recent recession.
Aside from this similarity, the two can not be linked together.
Historically, the United States was at its best when she was able to focus on the needs of its citizens and perfect its own democracy.
I believe that this is what we must again do before our own people lose faith in the American Dream.
To be blunt, the clashing religious wars between western and islamic civilations have been raging for centuries.
Either we fight to end it once and for all, or we hope that globalization will eventually open markets within resistant lands to further communication, peace, and prosperity for all.
