When Was the Adze Invented?
- The Dalton period ran from 8500-7900 BC, that's 10,500-9,900 years ago. According to The National Park Service, the Daltons were Native American hunter gatherers who descended from the Paleoindians based on similarities in technology, settlement and subsistence strategies.
- The adze first appeared in the archaelogical record during the Dalton Period, so the approximate date of invention was between 8500 and 7900 BC.
- The Daltons invented several other tools and weapons during their time in North America including the chipped stone drill/awl, the shaft abrader and edge-abraded cobbles. The most unique of these, and perhaps most useful was the Dalton Point. It was used as a piercing weapon for killing small and medium-sized game. After the kill, it was used to fully dress the carcass.
