There's no denying that if you truly want to lose weight, you need to increase your metabolism. Not only can a faster metabolism make losing weight much easier, but it is also key to maintaining your desired weight once you've lost it. - And the great news is that increasing your metabolism isn't difficult at all! There are actually a lot of easy, small things that most people don't even know about that can completely jump-start your metabolism and keep it running at its most powerful and efficient level.

1. Make sure that you're getting enough water throughout your day. New studies are finding that drinking water has numerous different benefits, and temporarily increasing your metabolic rate just so happens to be one of them. It won't improve your overall metabolism, but staying hydrated will cause your body to burn extra calories while it heats the liquid. Drinking water with a meal is also a great way to avoid fatty, sugary soft drinks and help keep your system flushed.

2. For higher overall, resting metabolism, nothing is as beneficial as lean muscle mass. This doesn't mean, however, that you need to rush out and join a gym or start drinking protein shakes. Simple muscle-building workouts that aren't stressful on your body are ideal for improving your metabolism. If you can, work a few rounds of push-ups or sit-ups into your day. It's not really important where you tone - that added muscle is going to burn calories even as you sit.

3. Always make sure you are taking in plenty of food each day. This isn't to say that cutting back on overly-large portions at each meal shouldn't be done, as it is a great way to lose weight. - It is when you begin skipping meals altogether that your metabolism slows to a crawl. When you skip meals like breakfast, this tells your body that you aren't getting food regularly. To make sure that your metabolism stays strong, you'll want to eat a lot of small and frequent meals, and never skip breakfast.

4. Not only are a lot of sugary foods absolutely loaded with calories, sugar can actually cause your body to slow the metabolism down and store extra fat. This is why avoiding sugary foods is key to maintaining a fast metabolism.

5. Get enough sleep. A good night's sleep can have more of an impact on your metabolism than you might think. Countless studies have shown that well-rested people are thinner than those who don't get enough sleep. Seven to eight hours are the magic numbers you should shoot for each night. We also know that muscle is regenerated in the very final hours of sleep each night, so getting enough sleep can help you increase your resting metabolic weight.

6. Fend off unnecessary stress. Stress isn't only unpleasant, it's unhealthy and it slows your metabolism way down. The belly is the worst area possible to accumulate extra fat, and as you may know, stress triggers fat storage in this unhealthy place, putting you at a higher risk of heart disease. It's unrealistic to think you can always avoid situations that cause stress, but with a little bit of time management, you can find ways to relax and take your mind of things that are getting to you.

7. Eat spicy foods. Once considered a myth, it is now proven that spicy foods temporarily increase your body's ability to burn calories. Sometimes your metabolism can be increased by as much as 8% for a short time after a meal, which can help you reduce the number of calories from the food that you ate.

8. Get simple exercise. Research is showing that even small amounts of extra physical exertion can have dramatic influences on fat burning and metabolism. If you get creative, you can come up with all sorts of ways that you can become more physically active without having to go out of your way. Those stairs at your office are a perfect solution - taking them over the elevator every day can do wonders for your metabolism.

Like all things in life, it's the small things that add up to big results. You don't have to morph your entire life to increase your metabolism and burn more fat. - These are all small and easy tips that will help to stimulate your body to shed away those excess pounds faster. And who doesn't want that?
