Beating Procrastination - Three Deadly Goal Setting Mistakes That Will Guarantee Failure
You've got a goal, a plan, a project, an idea or just something you want to accomplish.
You've always heard that you have to "Ink What You Think" so you have your pen and paper ready to make give commitment to your thoughts.
Writing down those goals on paper, in a goals book or on a white board is just the beginning.
As a procrastinator, can you count how many goals you've given life to in writing yet they have never seen their way through to completion? Why is that? Because you are making one (or all) of these Three Deadly Goal Setting Mistakes: Mistake #1.
You enthusiastically write out your goals then put the paper or book out of sight.
Mistake #2.
You are not putting Deadlines on your goals.
Mistake #3.
You are not putting specific, achievable deadlines on your goals and all the tasks involved in completing your goals.
Here is how you can avoid these mistakes and clear your path for success: Success Secret #1.
White Boards.
As a recovering procrastinator, I know Mistake #1 well.
I could wallpaper a small apartment with all the little pieces of paper I have with goals written on them that got stuck in a drawer or under a stack of papers on my desk.
Out of sight out of mind.
Once I started using a white board that changed.
Since the white board was hung predominately in my office with my goals mapped out right in front of me with daily action steps it was impossible to let Mistake #1 effect my success.
Success Secret #2.
Deadlines are a must when you write out your goals.
Deadlines give you focus and accountability and help a procrastinator eliminate the FEAR (False Expectations Appearing Real) that often clouds their ability toward taking action to completion.
By creating a deadline, the excuse or false expectation that you can finish 'in your own good time' is no longer viable.
Success Secret #3.
What is a deadline for a goal? For a procrastinator, it is a random date sometime in the future that he or she may or may not have the task completed by.
For you, the ACTION TAKER, a deadline is a very specific date and time that you will have the task at hand completed by.
It is extremely important to be very specific with your deadline and make sure that deadline is realistic and achievable.
Losing 50 pounds in 2 weeks, even if you set a specific date and time to lose the weight by, is not realistic (or safe).
If your goal can be broken down into smaller more manageable tasks, make sure to assign a specific, achievable deadline to each task individually.
The more specific the deadline is the better focus and accountability you will have for seeing the task through to completion.
Avoid these mistakes and you will find that beating procrastination is the next goal you will see as an accomplishment in your own life!
