What to Do When Debt Collectors Knock at Your Door

Through no fault of your own, you now find yourself way over your head in the amount of bills owed credit card companies.
You are stressed out.
You don't sleep well anymore.
You would have been okay and had been paying your bills on time, even over the minimum amounts due.
One day you went to work and before lunch, you were "pink slipped.
" No warning.
Just "a job well done" but no longer were you needed.
After a few hand wringing days, you finally gain the courage to think about your owed debts.
Priorities are now needed.
The roof over your head, utilities to be paid and of course gas and food.
That leaves little else and decisions to decide which unsecured creditor you are going to pay has to be made.
The rest will just have to wait until you secure another job.
After a few months, your phone starts ringing.
Debt collectors.
And they are none to kind.
Demanding voices.
Always wanting money.
You have none to spare.
These collectors are like hunting wolves on the prowl for a possible kill.
What are you to do? The answer is a phone call away.
But first, you have to know your rights when it comes to harassing individuals.
Here are a few...
(according to the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act).
  Debt collectors...
...
can only call you between 8am and 8pm.
Debt collectors cannot send you mail that suggest court papers.
...
cannot have you arrested.
Unpaid debts are a civil matter, not a criminal one.
...
cannot tell anyone else about your unpaid debts.
...
cannot contact you by phone if you tell them not to and follow up this request in writing.
...
cannot sue you.
Only your creditors can sue you, should they decide to do so.
If you are being hounded by debt collectors, do not give them any information.
You are the one in control.
Once you give them information they are requesting, you are handing over control to them.
You know you owe the creditors.
But you don't owe anyone attempting to collect overdue bills.
Always keep a log of any communication you have with anyone regarding your unsecured debts.
If you do need to file a complaint against any collector, you won't have to rely on your memory.
There are bullies everywhere and debt collectors are modern day bullies.
Credit card debts are at an all time high due to the ever increasing unemployment rate throughout the United States.
Business is extremely good for any bill collector.
And it should be good for a very long time.
Owing money is big business.
The creditors know this.
The debt collectors know this.
Don't attempt to reason with them; they are not reasonable people.
They are indeed unethical, have questionable morals and excel in harassment.
Bottom line.
Money talks.
If you have no money, debt collectors cannot hear you.
Ignore them and they will go away.
