How to Install a Line on a Stihl Edge Trimmer
- 1). Stop the engine by pushing the ignition switch into the "Off" setting and wait for the cutting head to stop spinning. Let the trimmer cool down for several minutes.
- 2). Place the engine onto a flat surface and lift the shaft up into the air so you can work on the head. Grab and hold the movable head still with one hand. Remove the cover with your other hand. If your model has two tabs on the outside, depress both the tabs and lift the cover away. If your model uses a star nut, unscrew the nut and remove it. If your model uses a center tab, unscrew the tab and lift it away.
- 3). Lift the spool out of the spool retainer area when the top has been removed. Wipe the spool, cap and retainer area with the rag, clearing away any dirt or grass. Measure out the appropriate length of line. Check with your operator's manual for specific model's lengths.
- 4). Cut the line off the bulk roll. Fold the line in half and snip it with the scissors. Locate the two retaining holes in the center of the spool. Locate the two notches on the top of the spool. Insert the first line into the retaining hole in the center of the spool that's closest to the notches.
- 5). Wind the line around the spool following the directional arrow located on the bottom of the spool. Use tight and even rows that are parallel and don't cross over into the other half of the spool. Stick the remaining 5 inches into the notch on the spool.
- 6). Insert the second line into the retaining hole on the opposite side of the spool. Wind the line in the same direction as the first. Leave 5 inches off the spool and stick it into the notch on the opposite side as the first.
- 7). Push the spool into the retainer area. Feed the ends of the line into the eyelets on the spool retainer. Hold the spool down and reinstall the head cover in the opposite manner that you removed it from. Pull both line ends out until the spool engages.
