Ice Pick Headache
Ice pick headaches are so severe they can knock you to the floor in pain.
I have experienced only three in my lifetime.
Two were quick and mild and one was so severe in did make me fall to the floor in pain.
It feels as though you have been struck in the skull with an ice pick.
Hence the name ice pick headache.
They are so quick and only last a few seconds that you don't even have time to go see a doctor about them because by the time you get to the doctor they have been over for a long time.
They can last from 5 to 30 seconds, but most people report the pain is only 1 second.
They are felt usually around the eyes or the temple area.
Mine was at the top of my skull.
They are very painful and over very quick.
They come as such a surprise and by the time you realize what it was, it is over.
There are usually no side effects, except for me I kept wondering if it would return and it did not.
Some headache sufferers do have some nausea and can be dizzy after an ice pick headache.
They only are experienced by 2% of the population and women experience them more often than men.
Most people that get these type of headaches are over the age of 45.
This type of headache is somewhat of a mystery.
You may have this headache only once and never experience it again.
Some people do report they have them frequently throughout the day.
Some attribute it to migraine and other say it is a type of cluster headache.
One medication sometimes used for ice pick headaches is indomethacin.
Usually they are over so quickly and appear only occasionally that most people don't use any medication for them.
If you do have an ice pick headache you should be evaluated by your doctor to rule out other causes as it could be something more serious.
