Coaching depends on the coach actively employing three important qualities: listening, observing, and empathizing with the client.
The job of the coach is to provide a safe, caring environment where the client can explore their feelings, perceptions and options.
In business coaching the coach must be tuned into the client and ask powerful questions.
Questions that help to make the client stop and consider the answer that is right for them.
Knowing what questions to ask and when to ask them the coach can redirect the client's thoughts and inspire action that will lead the client towards their goals.
The client must be prepared to do the work required to meet their goals.
In a business coaching relationship it is the client's responsibility to do what it takes to succeed and the dedication to do what it takes to reach their goals.
The coach will not be doing it for them.
Coaching is not consulting or counseling.
Consulting is when a client is looking for an expert opinion on how to do a particular job.
For example, if you want someone to help you set up a blog or website you'd hire a consultant and they would be able to give you expert information.
Counseling and coaching are similar.
However, counseling tends to be for people who are looking for emotional and psychological assistance from a professionally trained mental health counselor.
Business/lifestyle coaching is for those who are seeking to achieve tangible external goals in their business and/or personal life.
They may be looking at a career change or leaving a job to start their own home based business.
The client must realize when they enter into a coaching relationship that they will be doing the work.
They are hiring someone to keep them accountable and committed to moving towards their goals.
The job of the coach is to instill confidence by acting as an advocate and cheerleader within a safe, caring environment.
The business coach asks the questions that move the client to the next level.
Each time they meet the coach will review what the client said they would be committed to doing and keep them accountable for doing it.
Remember a coaching relationship is for the benefit of the client.
It is the client's journey that is the focus of every session not the coach's There are many traits and trainings required to be an effective coach.
The core traits are: patience, understanding different perspectives, effective communication, active listening, and empathy.
The three most important qualities are: listening, observing, and empathizing.
