Potty Training Methods

Potty training can be a tough task. Luckily for us parents, there is no right or wrong way and there are many different avenues to take when the time comes for you to train your little one. However, when potty training, parents need to be patient and supportive.

Relaxed Approach

It is best to approach potty training with a relaxed attitude according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). As a matter of fact, a more hands-off approach can be ideal for busy families, and independent learning has been known to help children develope self-confidence. This approach could take some time though, leaving us to purchase diapers for an extended period.

The relaxed approach begins with allowing your child to sit on the toilet with a diaper on and only removing it when the child agrees to go at it "bare-bottomed". While practicing this technique, you should ask your child if they would like to use the potty, and also ask permission to remind them every hour. It is not recommended that parents push their children when using this method. If he/she doesn't feel that they have to go to the potty then just drop the subject. When the child finally goes, we shouldn't act overly happy, because this could put pressure on the child to try to make him/herself go again.

For Busy Families

Quick potty training methods are better suited for the busy families. Dr. Phil recommends "The Potty Training in One Day Method". To use this method, you would have your child pretend potty training a doll, and have your child in underwear and offer them a lot of fluids (get em ready). You should then try to get junior to sit on the toilet and "go potty". If they then have an accident later, have them sit on the toilet to remind them where he/she of where they are supposed to go when it's potty time.

Quick potty training methods are not for everyone; remember that we must remain patient and calm so that we don't put too much pressure on the child. They could focus on the pressure more than the objective and therefore miss the whole concept of them learning to potty.

Guided Practice

If the quick methods seem to be too intense for you, but you don't want to let your child be in charge, you can always try guiding your child through training. This involves just getting a child-sized potty and switching your child into training pants. Take your child to the potty when you think he/she needs to go. If by chance they have an accident and tell you about, praise them for noticing their bodily functions and remind them to take action sooner on the next go round....
