Instructions

1

Choose a location and locate the birth statistics for women ages 10 to 49.
2

Divide the list of women into age categories in increments of five years (10-14; 15-19; 20-24; etc.).
3

Divide the number of live births in each age category by the number of women in each category to determine the relative birth rate for each set of women. Multiply this number by 1,000 to postulate the age-specific birth rate (ASBR) for each five-year group. This ASBR is the number of children a hypothetical group of 1,000 women would have using this rate, but other numbers can be used to simulate different group sizes or removed to simulate live births per woman.
4

Add the number of children per 1,000 women for each age category. Multiply the value by five to account for a five-year period for each age group. This value is the total fertility rate for the specified group size.
