What Are Some Financial Aid Grants in Tennessee?
- Eligible high school students enrolled in college courses at an eligible postsecondary school may apply for the Dual Enrollment Grant program. The Tennessee Dual Enrollment program is funded by the Tennessee Lottery. The program allows students to begin working on their college degrees while still in high school. To meet eligibility requirements, students must have completed all academic requirements at the 10th grade level, and be classified an 11th or 12th grader. Students must submit the grant application to the college in which the student is seeking admission. There are no minimum requirements of semester hours taken by students. Students cannot have a federal loan in default status, owe a refund on a Title IV federal financial aid program or owe money on a Tennessee financial program. As of 2011, the maximum amount of the grant is $300 per semester and $600 per academic year. The grant can only pay for lower-level courses. Students must achieve a 2.75 GPA for all college courses taken while participating in the Dual Enrollment Grant program.
- The Tennessee Hope Foster Child Grant program is available to students that were placed in the care of the Tennessee Department of Children's Services for at least one year after the age of 14. High school students entering college must have a minimum GPA of 2.75 and a minimum ACT score of 18 or a SAT score of 860. The maximum adjusted gross income of a parent or independent student is $36,000. Students must include an official certificate from the Department of Children's Services that meets the requirements of the grant program. Eligible students receive grants equaling the costs of tuition less any other financial aid received by the student. Grants cannot exceed the total amount of the state-wide average tuition and fees for a four-year public university.
- Low-income students residing in Tennessee may qualify for the Tennessee Student Assistance Award (TSAA) program. The program is funded by the federal LEAP program and the Tennessee Education Lottery Corporation. Students must have received acceptance or be already enrolled at least half time in a postsecondary institution. Grants are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and have an expected family contribution (EFC) of no more than $2,100. Students must remain in academic good standing and meet all other requirements to receive grant funds on a continual basis up to four years.
- The Helping Heroes Grant is available to students honorably discharged from the U.S. Armed Forces or a former or current member of the Tennessee National Guard called into active service. Students must reside in Tennessee at least one year after the application date. They must have received an Iraq Campaign Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal or a Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, on or after Sept. 11, 2001. Students must enroll in a two-year or four-year postsecondary school and cannot have earned a bachelor's degree. Students cannot have a federal loan in default status, or owe money on a federal Title IV student financial aid program or a Tennessee student financial aid program. The grant amount, as of 2011, is $1,000 per semester for a student who has passed 12 or more semester hours, and $500 per semester for passing six to 11 semester hours.
