Information on Lutes
- The lute is a stringed instrument which is plucked to produce music. The instrument has a rounded body which is attached to a bridge by a soundboard.
- Notes are produced in a similar way to a guitar with strings stopped over a fret, and each fret and string producing a different sound.
- The lute begins to appear in writings and pictures around the middle of the 12th century. It was played by Christian Europeans in place of the al'Ud.
- The lute was popular from the 12th century to the 18th century in Europe before its popularity dipped in the 19th century. During the 20th century the lute returned to a small level of popularity with the resurgence of folk music.
- Although early players of the lute played music created without a specific instrument in mind, players began to write music specifically for the lute in the Renaissance period.
