Australia has a long history of receiving migrants, first from Europe and more recently from Asia. Stable government and the favorable economic climate contribute to the appeal of moving there. Most people migrate there to seek a better standard of living. The health system and the educational opportunities are praised. The shared language is another reason with regard to the many migrants from the U.K. - Australia's climate is temperate and most areas have more than 3,000 hours of sunshine a year. Summer temperatures (December-March) average 29 degrees C (84 degrees F) and winter temperatures (June-August) average 13 degrees C (56 degrees F) across the country.
- Many people in Australia enjoy a high standard of living. This is best illustrated by the cost of housing. Desirable family homes are sold for less than $290,000 and the average Australian mortgage is equivalent to $255,000 (U.S. dollars converted from Australian dollars).
- The Changing Settlement Experience of New Migrants Report shows that 95 percent of migrants with skills found a job within a year and a half of arriving in Australia and 94 percent of them expressed satisfaction with their migration. Reports are updated with regard to the need for migrants in certain occupations where there are insufficient Australians to fill the gap. Migrants with the skills and qualifications needed at the time receive priority for entry into the country.
- Australians have an outdoors lifestyle. Eating outside at barbecues is popular and many people watch and play sports, particularly hockey, rugby, Australian Rules Football, fishing, surfing, cricket and sailing. Most Australians live near the coast and the beach lifestyle is popular, and attractive to many migrants.
- Aboriginal and European-rooted culture add to the quality of life, and there is a lot of activity around art, music, film, theatre and dance.
- People have migrated from more than 200 countries to settle in Australia and more than 200 dialects and languages are spoken. Approximately a quarter of the population was born outside of Australia. This demonstrates how welcoming the country is to outsiders.
- The geography of the country is diverse, with clear blue oceans, beaches, desert, rain forests and old rock formations. Walking and camping in the Outback is a favorite activity. Those considering a move to Australia are bound to find an environment there that they will enjoy.
- There are many examples of plants, flowers, trees and animals that are unique to Australia, such as the boab tree and the platypus. This makes living there interesting as you take in all that is new to you.
- Australia has the lowest density of population per square kilometer of land. In rural districts, many people live a great distance from their nearest neighbor. The population is a little more than 20 million people. This means there is plenty of land in which to spread out and build a life.
