    • 1). Download and print out about three to four pedigree charts so that you can make entries. A pedigree chart is found at the website in the Reference section.

    • 2). Start by talking to your father or his siblings and parents to gather information about sibling birthdays, marriages and children. Gather information about your father's parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts. Go as far back as you can talking to relatives and record all information on the pedigree chart.

    • 3). Look at online forums and other family trees at places such as ancestry.com and familyhistory.com to see if any of your immediate family surnames are being searched. Sometimes a distance relative can be searching the same information that you are searching. In the forums for the surname, you can post your results and ask if anyone has further information about your relatives.

    • 4). Search obituaries at the local library if the library has newspapers on microfilm. You can find a good deal of information from relative's obituaries. Look in census reports on microfilm if the library has them available. Read cemetery ledgers for the county and historical societies, which have a wealth of information. Look for information about children, occupation, and birth country and marriage date from obituaries. Look at newspaper articles for relatives that detail engagements, marriages and births.

    • 5). Continue your search online using such websites as ancestry.com and ellislsland.com to find records such as immigration records, census records, newspaper articles, marriage and birth records and land property deeds. There is a fee for ancestry.com after the free trial, but Ellis Island is free to search.

    • 6). Keep accurate records and do not assume because someone has the same surname that they are related to your father, his parents or other relatives. Check your sources against other resources before entering any information.
