How to Calculate How Much Tile to Purchase
- 1). Draw a sketch of the area you want to tile. Break down the space in rectangles, which will make measuring the space easier. For example, an L-shaped floor area would be broken down best into two rectangles forming the "L."
- 2). Measure the length and width of each shape. Write down these figures.
- 3). Multiply the length and width for each individual shape to calculate the area and square footage of that shape.
- 4). Add each figure together. This is the total area for the space where tile will be installed. Add 15 percent to the figure to account for broken tiles, waste and cuts.
- 5). Visit a local hardware store or tile supplier. Each box of tile will list the amount of square feet it covers. Divide the project's total square feet from Step 4 by the square feet amount listed on the box. This will tell you how many boxes of tile are needed for the project.
