How to Paint Stained Furniture
- 1). Thoroughly wash the furniture with an all-purpose cleaner and a scouring pad to remove dirt, grease and debris.
- 2). Sand the furniture with 120-grit sandpaper, then work your way up to a finer 180-grit sandpaper. This roughens the furniture surface so that it takes paint better.
- 3). Vacuum the sanding dust away, then wipe the furniture surface with a tack rag.
- 4). Wipe the furniture's surface with denatured alcohol to clean and dull the surface.
- 5). Cover areas around the furniture with newspaper and painter's tape.
- 6). Stir the primer until it is smooth. Using a paintbrush, coat the furniture with primer. Paint with the grain first, then against the grain. Allow the primer to dry completely.
- 7). Apply a coat of paint the same way as you applied the primer.
- 8). Wait for the paint to dry completely. If you want more coverage, add a second and third coat of paint.
