Golfers Follow Through With Those Drivers And Gain More Distance
Most amateurs struggle to get height from their drives to produce the extra distance that is possible from a fairway wood, particularly when a three wood is used that has a fifteen degree loft.
The optimum high launch angle requires plenty of club head speed and the correct impact angle.
Hitting the ball with a sweeping - yet also descending - angle of attack can be a tricky skill to execute on a regular basis.
But a little alteration to your set up will give you the best chance of achieving this.
Practice keeping your arms extended through and after impact will help you find the perfect attack angle to produce higher, and longer distance drives.
Here are some practice drills to help you with gaining more height and distance from your drives.
Step one.
Extend your arms out in front of you to the point where the club head evenly balanced.
Next lower the club to the ground for a good sweeping action.
Remember good club head speed on impacting the ball will encourage this arm extension.
Step two.
Many faults come from the upper body getting ahead of the lower half through impact.
You must center your upper body over the lower half, once you do this you will find a great improvement with your swing and balance.
Step three.
Make sure your shoulders are angled upwards.
This sets your body weight slightly toward your back foot, with your shoulders angled upwards and the ball sitting just ahead of your center will promote the correct angle for a really great fairway wood drive.
Step Four.
Practice just chipping the ball away.
This will give you an idea of the angle of impact you want to make with your down swing.
As you practice chipping try not to make any divots, just clip the ball on the underside by leaning slightly downward on the club shaft, then giving a gentle forward swing will give you height and distance.
Practicing this drill will give you a good eye for the impact angle when striking the ball.
Step Five.
Practice the positions described here.
Get used to the feeling of swinging into the fully extended position of your club after impact.
Then without a club try to make all the movements, you will notice a few changes in your stance and movement of your body as you grow more confident, you will feel stronger in your arms and legs and in no time you will be dropping your handicap which is what playing golf is all about.
