Do it Yourself Piano Moving

    Wrapping the Piano

    • Protect the piano with wrapping blankets before moving it. These act as shock absorbers and scratch protection for the move. Rent or purchase blankets and moving tape from a moving or storage supply store to get the proper materials. Ensure that all parts of the piano (including the legs) are wrapped tightly before moving it. If the piano is likely to be exposed to rain or moisture, shrink-wrap it before the move.

    Directing Assistants

    • No one moves a piano alone. Gather between three and four strong people to lift the piano. Special equipment is not necessary, but work gloves and load bearing harnesses can make the job less strenuous. Ensure that everyone lifts through their knees rather than with their back muscles. Backs should remain straight. Everyone should lift the piano at once to equalize the weight distribution.

    The Move

    • The extreme weight of pianos makes it so that they should only be moved a few inches at a time. Move the piano endways, not sideways. If possible, a heavy-duty dolly with large rubber wheels should be used to assist. Measure all doorways that the piano will have to move through to ensure that it will fit properly. When packing the piano on to a van or truck, make sure it is secured in place so that it does not slide during the move.
