The Oakland DMV
People everywhere dread visiting the DMV; Oakland is no different. Fortunately, the city has two locations, so the lines may be shorter than you would expect. You also have the option of completing some DMV services online, so consider checking that out before you make a trip to one of the locations.

The Oakland Coliseum location offers self-service terminals for vehicle registration. While you cannot use these for some more complicated transactions (such as reinstating your registration), they allow you to renew your registration on basic vehicle types. You can pay the required fee(s), if any, with cash or a credit or debit card. This may save you from needing to stand in line to talk to a DMV employee.
Taking advantage of this ability may help save you a visit to a physical location.
If you need to complete a simple task, such as requesting a vehicle or driver record, checking the status of an application, renewing your vehicle's registration, or paying for a traffic ticket, you can do so online. For a full list, check the California DMV's Online Services page. Even if you do need to make a visit in person, you can set up an appointment online. These appointments can be for either an office visit or a driving test.
