How to Build a Dual-Zone Pad

    • 1). Unscrew the plastic ring around the edge of the practice pad. Separate the pad from the backing.

    • 2). Measure the diameter of the drum pad. The diameter is the length from one edge to the other.

    • 3). Mark the center of the pad with a compass needle.

    • 4). Place the compass needle in the center of the pad and extend the leg of the compass to the edge of the pad.

    • 5). Measure the diameter of the paint can lid, to determine the center point.

    • 6). Shorten the distance between the leg and the needle by 1 inch.

    • 7). Place the compass on the center of the lid. Draw a circle on the lid.

    • 8). Cut out the circle using a hand-held rotary cutter. Measure the diameter of the circle to determine the center. Cut the circle in half to create two separate semicircular pieces of metal.

    • 9). Strip 1/8 inch from the end of the piezo wires to expose the metal. Each piezo has two wires attached.

Strip 1/8 inch from the end of each speaker wire. Note that each speaker wire is split into three ends. One end is standard, and the other end is split into a negative wire and a ground wire, which are red and black, respectively.

Solder both wires on the first piezo element to the single end of the speaker wire. Solder the speaker ground wire to the panel mount part of the RCA jack. Solder the positive wire to the ring mount part of the RCA jack. Repeat this process with the second piezo and speaker wire.

Glue the flat side of the first piezo to one half of the paint can lid. Glue the second piezo to the other half.

    • 13

File two notches in the plastic ring from the practice pad, large enough to feed the speaker wire through.

    • 14

Glue the nonpiezo side of each half of the paint can lid to the underside of the practice pad. Since you cut the lid so it is 1 inch less in diameter than the pad, there is room to leave a small gap between the two halves.

Reassemble the practice pad and feed the wires out of the notch. Piezo elements are small enough to permit reassembly, provided you only partially tighten the screws on the plastic ring.
