    Faux Feather Headdress

    • Fashion an Indian chief headdress using construction paper. Combine this project with a history lesson, a Thanksgiving play or just for dress-up fun. Begin by making a headband from a wide strip of construction paper, which is not quite long enough to wrap around the wearer’s head. Use a hole puncher to put a hole on each end of the strip, and then loop a piece of twine through the holes, to enable you to secure the headband on the wearer’s head. Cut large feather shapes from an assortment of colored construction paper, and affix them to the inside of the headband using a glue stick. Wait until the glue dries before wearing the headdress to avoid getting glue in the hair.

    Mask

    • Combine construction paper with a large paper sack to make a mask. Begin by selecting a sack that is large enough to fit over the head. Before making the mask, place the sack over the head and mark the location of the eyes. Remove the sack from the head, and cut out the eyes before proceeding. Cut features from construction paper, such as eyes, mouth and ears. Affix the features to the sack using a glue stick to create a mask. When working with a large group of young children, consider precutting a variety of features from construction paper and allowing the youngsters to select the construction paper features to create imaginative masks. Instead of random features, select a theme, such as a bunny mask for Easter, and precut the bunny features for the young children to apply to their sacks.

    Woven Mat

    • Fashion woven mats using construction paper. Use the finished project as a floor covering for a dollhouse, or as a decorative place mat, depending on the size of the mat.

Weave together two sets of colorful construction paper strips to make a paper mat. First, decide the width and length of the final mat. After this is decided, cut two sets of narrow strips from construction paper. All the strips should be the same width. Make one set of construction strips the length of the finished mat’s width, and the other set of construction strips the length of the finish mat’s length. Glue or tape strips from the width pile, perpendicularly, to one strip from the other set (referred to as the end piece). Place each strip side by side and affix the end of each strip to the end piece. After the strips are connected, begin weaving strips from the other pile into the affixed strips, weaving each construction paper strip in and out.
