Family values are about the ethical and moral which is traditionally accepted and transmitted within a family such as loyalty, honesty, faith, integrity, courteous, respect and other values.
Teaching your children the right values is one of the most important ideas that will make them a better person and help them make the right decisions throughout their lives.
Of course, your children cannot learn the values in a short period of time but it must be throughout their lives.
It is important for parents to know that children learn by example and they learn what they see from you parents.
Parents should be careful in their words and actions because their children are watching them.
So setting and portraying good values can be a best way for your children to learn the right values.
Teaching your children of the good values can be tough job since your children are exposed to environment that may influence the value formation of your children.
Television shows, magazines, the Internet, and peers may influence values which are not worthy at all.
That is the reason why the parents should be watchful of what your children are watching, reading, and surfing online, and the kinds of friends they are mingling with.
If they are exposed to bad values, then talk to your children and point out the poor values and explain the bad effects of having that kind of values.
Teach your children the values you want them to learn as early the toddler stage and don't wait until high school.
Value formation is better remembered if taught early and there should a continuous follow up so they will carry these values through their confused and unstable teen years.
Always look for opportunities to teach good values to your children.
You can teach your children to be honest in everything they do and say.
Value formation and character building may start by showing and letting them know the benchmark of standard good moral and correct ethics.
It is important to praise them for demonstrating good behavior.
If the children see a person who is showing bad values, you can ask your children what they can say and believe of the actions observed.
In this way, you can also evaluate how far your children learned the values taught.
Take an ample time to talk to your children about how life is with good values and how these make them a better person.
It is an effective way to teach your children by setting an example.
If they see you everyday being courteous and respectful to anyone you meet, they will follow your example and be courteous and respectful too.
Emphasize and let them understand the "Golden Rule".
Whenever you see them being rude to someone, talk to them and ask them how they will feel it someone are rude to them.
Let them express their idea and explain carefully the consequences of being rude to someone.
Let the children understand that they are not always right and they are bound to commit mistakes.
Just let them realize that they are responsible to correct the mistakes they made and that they are responsible for their actions and decision.
Always discuss your family values to your children in an appropriate time and setting.
Just like in any other teaching you have to create an environment that can stimulate learning.
Make an informal conversation with your children and avoid authoritarian type of teaching method.
