How to Make an Easy Bag With Old Levis
- 1). Lay the jeans on a clean surface and cut from them as many identical squares as you can. You will need 21 pieces that are each 6 1/2 inches square for an 18- by 21-inch bag.
- 2). Arrange the squares in a rectangle with three squares across and seven squares down. Overlap about 1/4 inch of each adjacent square and pin the edges together. Sew a straight stitch along the overlapping section of each square to join the entire rectangle together.
- 3). Cut an 18 1/2- by 42 1/2-inch rectangle of lining fabric and lay it face down on top of the good side of the denim rectangle. The good side is the side opposite the stitches. Sew a straight stitch along each short end to join the two pieces together. This creates smooth, finished edges for the top opening of the bag. Turn the fabric right side out through one of the long sides.
- 4). Fold the layered fabric in half with the lining on the outside and sew a straight stitch or zigzag stitch up each of the sides to connect the sides of the bag.
- 5). Cut two strips of fabric from the jeans. Make each strip at least 2 1/2 inches wide by 16 inches long. Fold the denim strips in half lengthwise to make each strip 16 inches long by 1 1/4 inches wide. Sew a straight stitch along the side opposite the fold on each strip.
- 6). Invert the denim strips through one short end and fold each short end inward about 1/4 inch. Sew along the short ends to make finished edges.
- 7). Find the center of one face of the bag. Measure 3 inches in either direction and pin the ends of one strip to the top, inside of the bag at these spots. Pin the ends about 1 inch down from the top edge of the bag. Flip the purse over, find the center and measure 3 inches in either direction. Pin the ends of the other strip to the top, inside of the bag at these spots, 1 inch down from the top edge. Sew a straight stitch across the ends of the strips and double back over the stitching once or twice for some extra strength.
