    • 1). Use a flat head screwdriver, or hammer claw, to remove any edging, nails, or staples from the broken vinyl tile that may interfere with your work. Tear off sheets of foil and, using painters tape, tape the foil sheets over surrounding tile to protect them while you are working.

    • 2). Cut strips into the broken tile with the sharp utility knife. Cut a square shape, about 3 or 4 inches on each side, into the center of the tile.

    • 3). Set the warm iron in the center of the tile to loosen the adhesive bond. Slide a putty knife beneath the tile, and pry it up, working from center of the tile outward. Alternate the heat application with prying until the tile is completely removed.

    • 4). Break the tile of more difficult areas into smaller pieces by hitting it with a hammer. Use the chisel to free the remaining pieces from the flooring.

    • 5). Scrape the remaining adhesive from the base floor until it is smooth. Sweep the area to remove any debris before installing a replacement tile.

    • 6). Replace stick-on type tile by removing the backing and pressing it firmly in place on the floor. Replace other types of vinyl tile with the vinyl adhesive mastic. Using a notched trowel, smooth a layer of mastic evenly over the floor surface and press the new tile in place over it. Use a book or other heavy object to hold the tile in place and let it dry overnight.
